It almost makes you feel guilty! Enjoying your breakfast eggs, whilst a sad looking parrot bends his head and stares at you, one eye at a time! Surely that is not where the eggs came from?
Large aviaries house many bird species at one end of this charming café. A garden setting that creates a soothing environment, and a perfect way to start any day.
Whilst breakfast is not the only meal that is served at the Kalimantan Café, they certainly do specialise in it. Far more so than most other places in Bali. The Wyoming Cowboy Breakfast heads their impressive list! Two eggs, any which way, plus your choice of Ham, bacon or sausage. Alongside this comes a serve of country-style fried potatoes.
A full range of omelettes are listed making a number of suggestions, plus the offer for you to come up with your own favourite combination.
Eggs Benedict [poached on ham and muffins, covered with hollandaise sauce] are always available, as is Corn Beef Hash, a large pile of pan fried diced potatoes and shredded corned beef that has been topped with a fried egg. I prefer a poached egg on mine, and they are always happy to oblige.
For the Mexicans, or those with a bit of fire in their belly early in the morning, there are always Huevos Rancheros! Two fried eggs on a white flour tortilla, topped with a green sauce, spicy sausage and refried beans. The shot of Tequila on the side, is an extra!
All breakfasts here come with your choice of fruit juice or fruit salad, tea or coffee, and two slices of toast with jam and honey. As the prices only vary between Rp. 12-15,000 excellent value is assured!
Although not on the breakfast list of offerings, Baked Beans and Ham on toast with a fried egg sound like a real breakfast to me!
My only gripe is the very ordinary bread used for the toast. Although how could anyone complain at these prices? For me, personally, I would be happy to pay an extra Rp.5,000 for a decent wholemeal or wholgrain or better still a rye bread. Particularly now that all these breads are freely available here in Bali, not like a few years back when plastic bread was the norm!
The rest of the menu consists of snacks, light meals for anytime of the day, and real meals for the hungry ones. Burgers, sandwiches and jaffles come in many varieties. The old American favourite, Reuben Dog, comes with a frankfurt covered with sauerkraut and shredded cheese.
Onion rings that have been dipped in a seasoned batter, before being fried in corn oil, make a good drinking snack, as do mushrooms that have been first covered with breadcrumbs and fried.
A Chilli con Carne is sure to warm you up! Ground beef that has been combined with beans, onions and a liberal helping of chilli. An original Sumatran Beef Rendang is served with your choice of rice or potatoes.
A basic version of the Indonesian Rijstaffel consists of satay, gado-gado, lumpia and ayam goreng spread around the centre of rice.
For lovers of Mexican food, tacos, burritos, enchilladas and nachos are available.
Full meals include T-Bone and Rib-Eye steaks from Australia, and Beef Shish-Kebabs [marinated beef fillet chunks interspersed with pieces of onion, tomato, mushroom and green peppers] that have been grilled.
BBQ Spare Ribs [pork ones topped with a homemade barbecue sauce] and Grilled Lamb Chops complete the popular mains at this anytime eatery!
A limited, but VERY well priced wine list [Jacob's Creek Chardonnay or Shiraz Cabinet for only Rp. 95,000!!!] complements this comprehensive menu.
Come and say hello to the birds, and start you day nice and relaxed!
