La Tartine.....

The French Sandwich!

La Tartine is French! So French that it is hard to believe you are in Bali! More a café than a restaurant it is on The ByPass Ngurah Rai in Sanur, in front of the Hotel Puri Tempo Doeloe which is under the same French management. Tartines are French open-face sandwiches. Black smoked ham is a common topping here, with a variety of extras all combined with a grilled cheese topping; simple seed mustard, boiled potatoes, scrambled eggs and crème fraiche or grilled vegetables. Another version is my favourite with ricotta on slices of spiced bread, shaved ham on tip of that with a few thin chilli slices to give it a bite! On the side is a green salad with seed mustard dressing. Instead of ham you can have a fish base, egg or just vegetables. A variety of fresh organic salads include a Vietnamese one wrapped in rice paper with nuoc nam dipping sauce. Egg Cocottes are also a house specialty [steamed egg served in a glass], and their Burgers are very different; beef on rye, chicken schnitzel or pastrami. Hachis Parmentier is the French version of an English Shepherds Pie. Minced beef cooked with onions and herbs topped with a layer of mashed potato before bneing baked in the oven. From Basque country is a Chicken Stew, chicken leg in white wine with tomato, capsicum, bacon, potato, rosemary and thyme. A couple of local dishes on the menu include Tempe Goreng Manis, cooked with red and green peppers, sweet soy and fresh ginger. Air-conditioned and non-smoking, walk into a French café!
