Dank Street Depot.....

Healthy Organic Fare!

Jared Ingersoll was one of Sydney's pioneers working with totally organic produce at Dank Street since 2002, also championing slow cooking methods for healthy eating.

Even before you look at the breakfast menu it is the available toast that takes you by surprise. There is a Sour Cherry Fruit Loaf, Banana Bread and the wonderful Soy & Quinoa. Also on offer, as almost everyhwere in Sydney's cafes, is Sourdough from America, why I have no idea, perhaps some people think it is trendy, for me it is boring!

Avoid the Toast and Jam option as the jams are not more than flavoured jelly, without any visible fruit. All the traditional egg breakfasts are on the menu, such as Poached Eggs with Hash, 2 eggs served with herbed tomato, sourdough toast & your choice of bacon or silverbeet hash.

Slightly different are the Creamed Eggs with Truffle Oil, 2 eggs cooked with cream & butter, served soft with chopped chives, truffle oil, roasted field mushrooms, herbed tomato and sourdough toast, Slow Cooked Broccoli & Eggs, with chilli, garlic & white wine on scrambled eggs and sourdough, topped with cow?s milk fetta & parsley.

Sardines pickled in chilli, garlic & lemon on sourdough toast with roma tomatoes & parsley or a Basil & Goats Cheese Omelette, a rolled omelette filled with fresh basil & Woodside Goats chevre. Served with sourdough.

Lunch goes up a notch, with the full dinner menu being available but the breakfast one also stays there all day.

Interesting starters include Gravlax, pickles, peppers & salted duck egg or Duck bresaola with apples & pears.

The Poached Chicken Salad, coconut dressing, chilli jam & peanuts is different to normal cafe fare as is the Jerusalem Artichoke soup.

The sandwich of roasted chicken, roasted corn & stuffing is very tempting as is the open sandwich of duck liver parfait, witlof & raisins.

Pasta can be Gnocchi, pumpkin, hazelnuts & sage, Orecchiette pasta with veal ragu or Cauliflower strascinato with linguine & crumbs.

Mains are also unusual. Breaded rabbit & celeriac remoulade with trotter jam, Duck Breast roasted on the crown, confit cannalini beans & jus or Potato topped fish pie (king salmon / blue eye).

How can desserts be healthy? Well, at Dank Strteet they do try. Apple fritters with custard, Goat cream, fennel sherbert and blueberry meringue or a Cheese Plate with blue or cheddar.
