Lamak Restaurant
Mango Tree.....

For those who know no better!

The restaurant building itself is in a Thai-style home from King Rama VI, located in the heart of Silom Road area [soi 6] half way between Silom and Suriwongse roads, with a big mango tree standing in the front yard, from which the name of restaurant originated. The restaurant, decorated with wooden furniture and fresh flowers, attempts to be like dining at home.

The courtyard outside is shady, breezy and pleasant, especially with evening live classical Thai music.

However Mango Tree serves Thai food for tourists. The only locals you will ever see here have been dragged along by their benefactor/friend. The food is the same commercial Thai that is available at too many Thai restaurants in the western world.

Thai without taste! Thai food does not have to be hot [a common misconception] but the spread of dishes [you do not eat individually as in European cuisines] should combine soup, hot, sweet, sour, stir-fried, curry, etc. eating one spoon of each at a time, interspersed with a spoon of fragrant jasmine rice.

Here all the tastes are bland. The service is brusque they expect you to order all the courses at once, if you do it in relays [entrees first]they will not even replace dirty cutlery. Not a good example of the 'Land of Smiles'.

Arrogance is the best word I can think of to describe Mango Tree.
