Qunci - Lombok.....

Style and Class!

Qunci Restaurant is an instant classic! A narrow terrace has banquets lining the wall, with small tables facing them. The restaurant is beachside, close to their intimate swimming pool. It is part of the classy Quinci Villas complex, a few kilometers north of Senggigi, designed by Ubud's famous Dutch architect, Joost Van Grieken. The food fits the place. The Thai menu is not overly Thai, their lunchtime Pad Thai a good example; the correct noodles are used, heavily laced withy large chunks of tender chicken and a generous number of juicy prawns, a few uncooked peanuts surround the plate. Without a few of the standard ingredients and side dishes for self-addition [dried shrimps, dried chilli and crushed peanuts] the result is a Pad Thai that is quite sweet. Strangely it is still an excellent and enjoyable dish. I never care how original a dish is or whose recipe is used as long as the result is interesting. Their Pad Thai is very tasty, as is everything else on this menu.

Their lunch menu comprises many small snacks and appetizers. This a great place for snacking, trying a variety of tastes. A few Mexican dishes are a good example. Enchiladas in tortilla shells, Fajitas in flour tortillas, Boritos wrapped in flour tortillas all filled with the meat of your choice, chicken or beef. Nachos, that universal snack whilst sipping the tipple of your choice, are available. They consist of jalapeno peppers, refried beans and cheese interspersed with crunchy corn chips.

The dinner menu is a mix of Thai influenced and modern International, with the emphasis on seafood. Start with a Cajun Prawn Salad or Grilled Scallops. Soups offer a Seafood Chowder as well as the inevitable Tom Yam Goong. A Ginger Chicken Soup and a Hungarian Goulash provide variety. For mains you can have an Asian Chicken and Cashews or a Thai Green Curry with chicken, seafood or beef. Grilled Snapper is served with prawns, Swordfish simply grilled, Prawns in a dry red curry, Tuna in a crab meat sauce.

Indonesian dishes include Udang Belado [prawns in a Sumatran chilli sauce], Ayam Ragi [chicken in a Borneo curry], a Sumatran Beef Rendang and Ayam Sereh [chicken in loemongrass].

The fresh Seafood Basket [baby lobster, king prawns, squid, fish and crab] is a feast for two, and a bargain at $50.

Qunci has a quality wine list as befits the place, as does the service which is both very professional yet relaxed and casual, which just about sums up all aspects at Qunci.

This is one of the new wave of professional establishments that are springing up in Lombok, and at prices that make Bali look very expensive.
